ABOUT US

San Carlos is a Municipality of Eastern Antioquia with an abundance of Natural Resources, tropical forests, great water wealth and a strategic geographical position in the Department (Reservoir Zone) This situation aroused the interest of the armed groups who fought for the area, involving in their struggles to the inhabitants of the Territory.

According to the report of the National Center for Historical Memory in the book San Carlos Memories of the Exodus in the war, the violence experienced here represents one of the most paradigmatic cases of the devastating capacity that the war had in Colombia.

Despite the magnitude of the conflict, San Carlos was at the same time the pioneer Municipality in the country in creating reconciliation strategies and return to their lands. Showing a great capacity for coping and resilience, the people of San Carlos participated in a process of reconciliation recognized nationally and internationally, becoming winners of the national peace prize in 2011 and becoming the first Municipality in the country Free of suspicion of anti-personnel mines.

However, despite this capacity for recovery, in San Carlos there is a precarious economic situation that prevents many inhabitants from developing their full potential, creating a future and walking as a community.

One of the solutions that has been proposed to this situation of few sources of economic income in the territory is the implementation of a Municipal Rural Community and Nature Tourism Plan (San Carlos Development Plan 2020).

Acting in accordance with the Municipal, Departmental and National guidelines, the Ecotravesías Tourism Operator Company initiates a community tourism project with four San Carlos Destination Routes (Designed and Developed with the accompaniment of Corporación Región to a team of Social leaders) initially and with the perspective of doing many more in an organized and coherent way, having as fundamental premises environmental and cultural sustainability, productivity, community participation, and especially of women.
